Dresden City Guide

overall city rating 71%

Historically, Dresden was referred to as ‘The Florence of the Elbe’ thanks to its beautiful art and architecture. Much of this splendour was destroyed following the allied bombing of the city during WW2, along with during many years of Soviet rule. However, a lot of restoration work has been undertaken and continues today in order to bring the city of Dresden back to its former glory. Dresden is situated on the River Elbe in the eastern part of Germany and is the capital of the Saxony area. The city, which celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2006, is home to over 500,000 people and can be divided into a number of different districts. The ‘Altstadt’ (old town) and ‘Neustadt’ (new town) are where you’ll find most of the main attractions. For example the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden, this is a complex of twelve different museums including the Grünes Gewölbe and the Rüstkammer. Other notable museums include the Dresden City Museum, the State Museum of Pre-History and the State Collection of Natural History. Another top attraction is the Frauenkirche, the restoration of which was completed in 2005. Dresden Castle is another important landmark. A one time home to royalty, it’s one of the most striking buildings in the city. Across from it you’ll see the Awinger Palace, where some of Dresden’s major festivals are held.

Dresden was totally (at least pretty damn close, at least) destroyed in World War II. Looking at it today, it is hard to tell. They have done an astounding job at restoring the city, especially the historic district. Totally recommended!!
