Cork, voted the 2005 “European Capital of Culture,” is widely regarded as the second city of Ireland after Dublin; yet the locals playfully insist it is the authentic capital of the country. The city has a continental feel, accentuated by the fabulous Georgian architecture present throughout the city. The centre offers great shopping opportunities; mainly focused on St. Patricks street, twice voted the best shopping street in Ireland. Indeed the city centre has over 600 shops, and if you’re feeling hungry after all that shopping there are almost 200 different cafes and eateries to choose from. Many festivals are held throughout the year, one of the highlights being the Jazz festival which attracts both world famous and local musicians. People flock to Cork to experience the local’s legendary friendliness and to sample the nightlife; experience it for yourself and you’ll see why.

Nice colourful buildings along the river Lee as well as a bright but small town centre. Oliver Plunkett St and the English Market definately worth checking out. Not a bad place to live either. Cost of living is relatively cheap but expenses quickly add up as food and entertainment is in the pricey side. Lots of eastern europeans, esp Polish here as well which is surprising as instead of the Irish charm and accent, you often come across the broken english that they speak. But hey, I dont mind the Polish but it takes away the feel of the town to a degree.close

The people are friendly, the city center is quite pretty and a lot has been spent recently tarting it all up. The shopping isn't at all bad, although everything is quite expensive - this is Ireland after all. St Patricks Street, Grand Parade and the South Mall are fine city-center streets, with some lovely buildings that are well worth visiting. Churches abound, the two most famous probably being St Finbarre's Cathedral and the church and its famous bells at Shandon. There is a wonderful covered food market called the English Market that is a must for any visitor. Indeed, food plays a starring role in any trip to Cork – the city is considered by some to be the culinary capital of Ireland and certainly any meals I've had here have tended to be very good and for such a relatively small city there is a wealth of restaurants to choose from. Some nice day trips are possible from Cork too if you use it as a base, examples being Cobh on the one hand and beautiful West Cork on the other.close

Having lived here all my life. There is the culture, the food, the people, and the city itself. The weather could be the only thing dampening a trip to cork.. even then there is much to see indoors. Corks food industry is hard to be matched... with 100's of restaurants in the city center alone. Food spanning all and ever type of food imaginable. Top Bites: Ill Padrinos, Luigi Malones, Ginos. The nightlife in Cork is vibrant and full of life almost everyday of the week, although busy at the weekend's. With many clubs and pubs and gig venues dotted around the city it's easy to find one right for you. Top Grooves: Red's, The Mardyke Sightseeing is fun even a visit to the famous Blarney stone won't go amiss. Transport isn't the greatest thing in the world so for best value renting a car would prove valuable.close

Trains every hour from Dublin, you can now descend upon the lilting city in 3 hours. Cork is a vibrant city with culture coming out it's ears! Decifering the local lingo can be a feat in itself! Great city for gigs, theatre, street theatre and general sessions. The great thing about Cork every hip bar is within staggering distance, so even if it's pouring down (which it so often is in the Emerald Isle) you can dash between the drops to the next venue! So don't be a 'Langer' mark it down for a visit! An hour from Cork takes you into the west...visit some of the most beautiful seaside towns of Ireland such as Kinsale, Baltimore, Skibbereen to experience the true Irish countryside.....you'll find some of the best Guinness in Ireland!close
