I visited relatives in Chattanooga, TN in August 2003 & it was my first experience the rural US bible belt & you can't go a few yards without seeing another church of some variation! The countryside is certainly lovely (green gentle rolling hills & rivers etc) & my first experience white water rafting on the Ocoee was fantastic & the highlight of the trip. If you're the outdoorsy type there's a lot to do in terms of hiking, rafting, etc but as regards eating & going out you're very limited. The heart of the bible belt has very little to offer other than your usual American chains & restaurants offering everything bar the kitchen sink deep fried! Forget pubs & clubs - there's not much other than dodgy honky tonk outlets.. my 50 something aunt was even refused alcohol in off licence without id!! Hamilton Place is Chattanooga's mall & is apparently the biggest in Tenn, expect all the favourites like American Eagle & Abercrombie, but with no Macys/Bloomingdales etc, New York style sprees are out of the question. We went to the Chop House in Hamilton place a few times & it was fine nothing memorable other than huge portions & fries with everythign. Overall, if the great outdoors is your thing you may enjoy aspects of a trip to Chattanooga, me, I'd be happy to give it a miss!close
