I've only ever been there on day trips, but would imagine that, like Venice, once the day trippers like me leave it's a magical place at night. The main town is very touristy with hordes all over the place. Unless you are in the whole of your health you'll have to depend on the funicular, the bus or a taxi to get you up to the main part of town... the roads up are very steep! Once there you can head out of town and follow a very pleasant circuit of part of the island, a path following the coast that takes about 60-90 minutes to do - excellent views and scenery, but again some steps to negotiate here and there and, because of the heat, bring a bottle of water and something to chew on for energy at least, like a chocolate bar. The shopping in Capri is very upmarket and I know people have been complaining about the prices, but actually I found the stuff here to be cheaper than in the same shops on the mainland or abroad, so if you like designer stuff, this might be the place to check it out. Not much in the way of beaches - all rocky coves quite far from the main hotels so if you are a beach person this might not be the ideal spot for a long stay. I found coffee and snacks in the cafés to be the priciest things here, relatively speaking.close

Even though it is officially in the Naples area, it is actually closer to the Amalfi Coast and to the Sorrento peninsula (to which it was connected a long time ago) than to the city of Naples. It is a popular destination, quite pricey and touristy, especially in the summer. You will find many shops, fashionable restaurants and bars, hotels, Roman Villas, small alleys and blue sea. The central “Piazzetta” is a favourite spot for celebrities and paparazzi. Capri has two harbours, they are called Marina Piccola and Marina Grande. Most ferries and hydrofoils call at Marina Grande. The upper part of the island is called Anacapri. Capri’s spectacular natural landscapes are typically Mediterranean. The coastline is superb, though you will not find big sandy beaches in Capri. If that’s what you are looking for, you might want to visit the nearby island of Ischia, much bigger than Capri and with good sandy beaches. The “Faraglioni”, big limestone rocks emerging from the sea, are Capri’s most famous landmarks. Some tips: avoid July and August when Capri is overcrowded and expensive (June and September are way better); try “insalata caprese” in its place of origin, local seafood dishes and “torta caprese” (with almonds). If you organize a boat tour of the island, opt for early morning or late afternoon. Between 11am and 3pm the sunlight is too strong and there is often a typical summer mist due to humidity, so you will not be able to appreciate completely the landscape, the colours of the sea and the Mediterranean flora and fauna.close

There are some amazing walks to do and swimming is fantastic. The famous blue grotto is a real Rip, costing 9 euro's for each person to go in on a row boat for 3 minutes then back out again to pay the driver even more money. It is famous and it is beautiful, but you can go without seeing it and have just as good a time in capri! the Monte Solaro bed and breakfast is cheap and fantastically located, i would recommend it if you are staying on Capri! have funclose

The natural beauty and the island architecture make the sights incredible. We spent a whole day on the beach at Marina Piccola. There were mostly locals there; the water was refreshing and clear to the bottom; and the cliffs that rose straight out of the water were impressive. Don't miss the chairlift up to the top of the mountain. We brought our own food, and skipped shopping. Everything is pretty expensive here, but we found an incredible B & B for a great rate: Il Tramonto.close

4An excellent hotel!!! I would live there if I could. It's gorgeous, with intricate tiled floors & it's kept spotless. The staff are very helpful, friendly, & speak english. There isn't a view of the coast from the hotel, but it's a nice little getaway up in Anacapri, away from crowds and noise....

1This is the place where we have had the most fun visiting. And it is made even sweeter by the very nice people from the Lotus flower. We will always remember the very cute red little car and Vincento that took us all the way from the port to the hostel. Located in the most quiet area of Capri,...

Great hotel - not too far from the center of Anacapri (a nice ten minute walk) and very clean and comfortable. The manager was very helpful in showing us what we could do while on the island and gave very good directions. Great value!

1We loved it here. The staff was exceedingly helpful. They gave us directions to everywhere we wanted to go. The lady also helped us when one of our party got sick and we had to go home early. They were very accomodating and we would love to go back here and spend a longer amount of time.

The intense blue tones of the “Grotta Azzurra” are created by the daylight entering through an underwater opening below the entrance and filtered by the water, so that only the blue tones pass into the cave. To get in, visitors need to take boats from Marina Grande and then board smaller boats and lie down in order to access the “grotta” through a...
