But no visit is complete without going to Robben Island. The place can't be described but the experience of going there and seeing first had what it was like for those imprisoned for having an opinion is just amazing! A 15min boat trip from the dock's at Cape Town brings you into the Island and above you as one enter is a sign that reads "Welcome to Robben Island", all along the wall there are photos in black and white showing what really went on. Depending on what boat you took you will be met by a tour guide who is either someone who spent time in Robben Island or someone who spent time in one of the many other prisons! You will see how they were treated, Nelson Mandela's cell and a clever door which I'm sure everyone will enjoy. A truly unique experience and worthwhile trip!close

If you are interested in the recent history of South Africa, apartheid and ANC, this is the place to go. The guides are all ex prisoners and our guide had a moving personal story to tell - when we asked him after the tour. Highly recommended.

This is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned along with many others during the apartheid in South Africa. Well worth a visit while you are in Cape Town, ex-prisoners of Robben Island give the tour. It’s a short ferry ride and good way to spend a morning or afternoon. Tickets can be bought down... more This is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned along with many others during the apartheid in South Africa.
