When I arrived in Cancun it was a stiffling 40 degree heat and they refused to turn the air-con on until 11pm! It was full of bed-bugs (breeding in the heat no doubt) and had one tiny bathroom for the entire hostel to share (needless to say it was filthy). I was supposed to stay 2 nights but I checked out after the first and stayed elsewhere. Staff were unhelpful.close

It´s also a really good base for visiting other areas of the Yucatan.close

In many aspects, this is true, and it isn´t for everybody. However, if you have the opportunity (I went because I´m living in Mérida at the moment), and you´re intrigued to find out what Cancún´s all about, I definitely think it´s worth seeing for a day. If you´re trying to save a few bucks, I stayed at Hostel Meson de Tulum, a great value in the Ciudad de Cancún, and, if you play your cards right and look for the right deals, you can cruise the gorgeous beaches and have as much of a wild time in the Zona Hotelera as anyone else. I guess my attitude toward spending a night there was more along the lines of "Why not give it a go? I mean, Heck, this is Cancún!"close

Nights In the Hotel Zone end around 4 to 5 am and never dissapoint...That is is you are looking for a crazy night filled with non-stop drinking and dancing on platforms. If you are looking to go out but are a bit more reserved then one of the smaller bars downtown in el centro may be better fitting. Durring the day it is definitely worth your time to drag yourself out of bed and explore your surroundings... isla mujeres is amazing...rent a golf cart and cruise the island where you can go snorkeling for a cheap 25 bucks or swim with the dolphins or even a shark. Chichen Itza is well worth the visit especially around either of the equinoxes when you can see the serpent shadow descend the ruins as the sun sets. Playa del carmen has a great beach and is more laid back than Cancun. From there you can take the ferry to Cozumel, but the trip is really only worth it if you hire a taxi to take you to the far side of the island where the beautiful beaches are. The side where you get off has no beach at all really and is swarmed with 4 to 5 curise ships worth of tourists. Cancun was a great Spring Break Trip. In order to do and see it all you pretty much have to just accept the fact that you will be getting close to no sleep and that when your not completely trashed your definitely a little buzzed.close

It rained a little, but not enough to cause damage to overall experience. Price is no longer cheap - same as any large city in US. Great culture and sightseeing, excepts all reefs are dead since Wilma. Lots of shops, but no good deals. Lots of buses, taxis, and rentals - not to mention easy walking if you stay downtown Cancun or in Play del Carmen. Stayed in Costa Del Mar in Playa del Carmen and would not recommend this - for three people, it was $95 usd per night average (one night peak, 5 off-peak). Vary Vary lound music from neighbor Blue Parrot Beach Club until 4AM every morning and aweful beds made sleep very hard. Beach is very small after Wilma. Free use of hotel beach does not extgend to bringing your own food or beverages and hotel bar is horrible, expecially at night.close

The only downside, a major downside, was that it was all tourists! All the people who lived in the city worked for all the massive hotels that gobbled the entire beach. There was a small stretch of public beach less than 1/4 mi. The rest was owned by hotels. A sad sight for the locals.close

Gran Melia Cancun 80%
The hotel is situated in a beautiful location on the beach in Cancun. The public areas are really nicely finished. The staff are a bit all over the place, but that can be partly attributed to the laid back atmosphere. They had some heavy rain while I was there and there were a number of leaks,...

We were pretty satisfied with the room and hotel. The food was also really good. The only disadvantage is the beach, which is not so clear (there were algae) and not so turquoise as in other places. Also, if you like to go out, the happening places are not walking distance from the hotel.

catamaran to Isla Mujeres100%
We booked a Catamaran All-day/all-inclusive excursion. This was not the "ferry-style" boat, this was a REAL CAT. I wouldn't reccomend anything else!! The staff was utterly amazing and their energy boundless! Max capacity about 25 people so you were able to interact with other travellers. All you can drink, buffet lunch on Isla Mujeres, time to shop/go to the...
