Bucharest is ok, but like most places is just a big city. There are much better places to see in the countryside and smaller towns, for example Sighisoara and Brasov.

Unfortunately we didnt get a chance to travel around the rest of Romania but I think Bucharest is the ideal place to begin. Not huge amounts to see but the people are really friendly and chilled out.

Everybody wants to tho cheat on you, from the taxi drivers, to the hostel stafff. Everyboday wants money, The people are mostly unfriendly and don't konw theri city od don't want to help. Beware of your belongings!!! Romanians may be charming, but only to get your money, they are like tunesian carpet sellers. They know better hostels, they drive you everywhere you want for 500 € etc. Even if you say out loud NO they will run after you hundert meters to convince you to take their taxi, eat their food, etc. They are intolerant, they hate their neighbouring countries, their minorities, especially hungarians and germans and gypsies. They think, that they are the heir of the roman empire! The only way to make them shut up is to speak lound and unfriendly russian. Taxi drivers usually want 200 € for a 8 km trip, just give them 40 RON, if they complain, tell them, they should call police. Then they give up. Don't rely on time shedules, the 8 km trip to one of the 2 airports may take you 2,5 hours. Don't hesitate to give the taxi driver direktions. Be rude to them to get what you want. otherwise, they won't react. Romanians think, that they are god's present to the EU. In my opinion, every contury, but Romania fits in the EU. Bukarest is in fact rather exsive if you want to shop clothes, wehen you compare it to cities like Sofia, Kosice, Warsaw, Krakow, Odessa, Kiew. etc. The most important thing to me: Romanians are the most homophobe people in Europe!

Bucharest is not a place I would go back to again. I've been to a lot of developing countries but Bucharest has to be the ugliest city ever. THere's not a ton of things to do and the city's air is toxic. Go once but don't go again.

Bring a good map!!! We got lost several times. Be aware of taxis who rip you off, pickpocketers, and beggars. The beggars are harmless, but regrettably, there are many of them.

Bucharest, beautiful girls aplenty which sadly conflicts with the masses of stray dogs and their faeces. Bucharest looks rather 3rd world but has plenty of hidden gems and development is ongoing.

I had a reseveration for two nights at €15 per night, when I got their the lady that run the place said, "I had no bed or room for you but my friend hostel had room for you." So, I took a cab to her friend place and her friend wanted to charge me €30 per night. As, I walked away she said, "you had €3 deposited and it only €27 per night." I got so mad, I walk away. So I think this hostel shouldn't be in worldhostel.com at all.

Bit off the beaten track as far as tourist were concerned, but Romanians are really friendly. No main town centre and poor signage on streets and metro, so finding your way around can be tricky and time consuming. Once you put a bit of effort in, the town really rewards you.

The city is not nice. Even the people in the hostel tell you that there's nothing interesting to visit in the city. Taxi drivers charge you more than 4 times the correct rates, in the restaurants they also try to charge you more plates than the ones you've asked for. And at the bars, you'll pay much more for a beer if they notice you're a foreigner.

Yeah - well, Bucharest is a cool place with a relatively young friendly crowd. People can be a bit stand-offish at first but that is just the Romanian way. Once you get talking to people they are all to keen to help you out. Recommend hiring a car (if you are brace enough - they drive like maniacs over there! You have to be an aggressive driver...) as it'll let you get out the city for the day. There is only 1 road that gets you to Transalvania so be wary that if there are road works (which there will be) you may be cueing up for a while to get anywhere. on the whole Romania is gorgeous and I hope that it joining the EU in 2007 (if the make it) doesn't spoil the place.

Look between grotty ceasescu-era buildings for architectural delights - tucked away bars and restaurants offer character & value for money not found in the more expensive areas, e.g. Calea Victorei.

Enjoyed the city.... we went in december so the weather was poor. Miserablly wet and cold. TRaffic chaos all around.... they need policemen at every street corner to ensure the lights weren'r broken. People were really helpful and friendly to us as we tried to find our way the many times we got lost. They were so helpful, and seemed genuinely pleased and eager to help! We both loved the Romanians!! You have to check out the palace of parliament - a must see. If you are thinking of gong there, don't spend any more than 2 days in Bucharest.... you will see the most important sights in this time, and you'll really need to get out of the city as it has a way of getting under your skin. Oh and Baneasa airport has to be the worst i have experienced. Be warned!! But somehow, I liked Bucharest... it's unforgettable.

It's an okay city. There is some to do but the best way to go about is just relax and have fun. The night life is okay. Best if just hanging out with friends. Otherwise visit Brasov or something.

Bucharest is big and grimy and chaotic and full of traffic. Don't expect beautiful sights, but do give it a chance. I'm glad I didn't listen to the people who told me not to bother with the city. I really enjoyed staying there.

Bucharest is a pretty happening place. I wouldn't rate it as a tourist destination as its just a busy dirty city but it is somewhere that you should spent 2 days. Saw the peasent Museum its pretty cool and the village museum is a sight but its not a must see as its just hundreds of similar old houses but take a walk that way as the Trumphal Arch is cool with the funny burned champs Elisee strip leading up to it. The Palace of Parliment is worth checking out as its so big, but ugly. Bucharests main pull is it is the gateway to the rest of Romania which is such a beautiful country with mostly very friendly and accomidating locals.

Interesting, new culture (for me), lot´s of straying dogs, few bars (cafés), interesting buildings, many needs to be taken care off, a littel lika Paris, boulevards, quite easy to navigate, dont´like taxidrivers intent to svindle you, very expensive taxirides sometimes, i would go back again. .

Recomendable.

Although it is not the nicest-looking town, it is not as dangerous or as greedy as expeceted. Maybe winter is a good time to visit Bucharest because there are not many tourists.

Our second stay there; this time they had a little problem with the snow. :) So walking around was even more complicated than it is normally. But people there are friendly and helpful. You need a little experience (and some time) to find something to eat in the city centre. Couldn\'t find any bus timetables anywhere.

The Midland Youth Hostel could not have been better! The staff were always more than willing to help with all our enquiries. Bucharest was incredibly vibrant, loads of energy pretty much everywhere you went. Found that the people were very accomodating, happy to help and very fun! Most were intrigued to learn that i was from London and wanted to ask a few questions. I had to oblige as i had loads about Bucharest :p Met 2 couples out there in Green Hours 22 Jazz Cafe. Nice bar, VERY cheap! They took us to another bar called Becker Brau which was closed but they knew the owner so we were allowed in for \"1\" :p They were then to go home but one of the barmen was going clubbing and invited us out with him. Great city guide, really fun guy.

When I got off the airport I thought \"what did i get myself into?\" Finding the hostel was crazy and everyone stares and one guy even told me to stop talking to him and go away. SO the adults, I can say, are somewhat hostile. The sightseeing is subpar except the art museum which was pretty cool. I liked the park and the city is cheapish, but i dont know if its worth feeling unsafe. The best thing about my trip was the nightlife. we went clubbing and everyone knew how to speak english and they were all very welcoming and friendly. I went with a group of 5 though, so much less than that I would not have felt super safe. But its an adventure and inner Romania, especially Transylvania is beautiful!
