Thanks to its enchanting squares, medieval buildings and cobweb of canals, Bruges is like something out of a fairytale. Unsurprisingly, it is Belgium's most popular tourist destination. This is a city in which you can get totally lost, yet always find your way back to the centre thanks to the Belfry, the old tower in the centre of the city. As you walk around its streets, crossing canal bridges and letting the sound of trotting horses drown out your chit-chat, you will feel like you have stepped back in time.

Buy chocolates from supermarkets, though, as the little places are very expensive. Good bakeries, though, if you know which ones to visit.close

Weather was v variable - from blue skies to pouring rain in a short space of time. Restaurants, although plentiful, didnt cater for vegetarians, in the main, and finding a decent looking restaurant off the main square was perhaps more difficult than it should have been. Beware that restaurants on the market square have been known to rip people off with hidden costs. Really easy to get around - very compact and great for ambling about for hours on end with endless stops in cosy cafes xclose

Top Rated Bruges Places to Stay

  1. Gasthof Groenhove 95%

Nice place and not too far to walk to the old town. Laundromat is a short drive away for which the owner/manager gave us directions. Staff are great. We were 3 guys but it is probably better suited to couples and honeymooners. But we have no complaints. Nice & clean and good rooms.

Top Rated Bruges Restaurants

This Flemish character budget restaurant is a delight for atmosphere and good affordable local and international dishes. I really liked this place. We just popped in for a couple of drinks after dinner. We actually walked by it when we were looking for it, it's not that easy to see. Its a nice place though and was packed on Saturday night. I'd say it would be lovely in Winter with the big open fireplace. Nice mojitos! Think they were about €7 each so cheaper than at home. When you're in Markt in Bruges (it's the square with the big tower called 'The Belfry' in it) you'll notice two fast food stalls in front of it. These are a Bruges institution and are the perfect place for a quick fill. There are two of them and they're not run by the same people, but they pretty much deal in the same food.
