Bordeaux is famous for wine, and a lot of it's excursions were wine-based - so if you don't like wine you might find yourself short of something to do. Like every other place in France that I have been to, Bordeaux is expensive for eating and drinking out, a pint of beer typically costing €6. Arcitecture is nice rather than spectacular, and the locals seem to treat tourists with less contempt than in other areas of France. Weather was ok, good enough for the middle of October. A nice city to see once.close

The City is quite easy to get around on foot, althought there is 3 trams that run very regularly, they look more like trains than trams. The architechture on the building and churches gives you an idea that Bordeaux has alot of history. Such building such as the Grande Theatre, St Andrews Cathedral & Notre Dame. It is said that Bordeaux wine is the best in the world, I went to 2 vineyards one just in the city itself, but if you want to see a real Vineyard with all the grape plantations than you'll have to go further out of Bordeaux, with wine, I'm not an expert but the stuff I sampled wasn't half bad. As far as the food is concerned you can eat quite cheaply and theres lots of little shops/cafes that are open quite late but I suggest that you pop in to a place called Les Provinces, just pop in and ask to see the Manageress Karina and tell her the New Zealander Stuart sent you, she'll give u some good advice on whats good to eat. If you ask me all the dishes that came out, looked amazing, mine was exquist & the price was a bit more but worth the money. Overall If you miss Bordeaux than you'll miss a very special part of France.close

Very hip atmosphere; great for bikers too. The weather is pretty hot though.close

Quality Hotel St. Catherine 80%
THe Hotel St Catherine in Bordeaux is centrally located, just off the main pedestrian street, there are lovely restaurants and bars on the same street as the hotel itself. We stayed 2 nights, staff in the hotel were lovely, the rooms themselves are adequate - for us it was just a place to sleep...

Mercure Bordeaux Le Lac 80%
This was a last minute booking as I got last minute tickets to the rugby world cup to see Ireland play Gerogia. The hotel is a good 10-15 minutes in a taxi and if you haven't factored this in, add an extra €100 to the reasonable rate of €80 per room for taxi fares. The staff were friendly,...

8The hostel is not in the town centre, obviously. Even though it is easy to reach by taking the subway to the university.

Phenix d'Or100%
Great Vietnamese restaurant near to Hotel de Ville in Bordeaux. Excellent value for money. Recommend the Nems which are the deep fried Vietnamese spring rolls. The restaurant is small and basic, sit outside and watch the world go by.

La Tupina100%
One of Bordeauxs best restaurants. It has won a number of awards and certainly lives up to expectations. Situated in an old stone building, you can see the food being cooked in traditional French style including chickens roasting on the spit in the fireplace. The chips are to die for - they're cooked in duck fat and taste like more.. Excellent wine list...

The Connemara Bar80%
Good Irish Pub located near the cathedral and Hotel de Ville. Great atmosphere during Rugby World Cup, though they did hike their prices up. Do a cheap bar menu including breakfast, lunch and dinner. All the usual Irish beers and live music.
