Great cafes with music and excellent aperitivi -- I recommend Zamboni Cafe for a great buffet. Also, there are lots of small towns nearby if you want to take off for a couple hours to see Ferrara, Modena, nell' Emilia, or Parma, all of which are worth a quick trip. However, you might find yourself so enthralled with Bologna you won't want to leave. Piazza Maggiore is always filled with music and there is enough to explore in this single area to last you a day -- museums, art exhibitions, cathedral, palazzi. Take a trip up the old 12th century tower, if you have the breath for it. And don't miss the one next door which is leaning a full 3 meters on its side. Get the map with walking tours from the information office at the train station and you'll be all set.close

One thing I was unable to find in any tour groups, but I highly suggest doing, is the tour bus. It costs about 10 euro, but it's well worth its while. The weather was beautiful, absolutely perfect. And if you plan on walking up to San Luca at all do it 2 hours before sunset, and get pizza and wine from the pizza place at the top and watch the sunset over the city, it's beautiful, and well worth the walk!close

We were told it was very beautiful and had a great night life. I bear in mind that we cisited in August when the students disperce for the summer, but I thought during the day, the city was pretty normal, apart from the historic centre which was nice but small. Bologna is best seen at night, with the low lighting it changes the city, but the night life was non existent, only a few bars and irish pubs. Worth climbing the tower to get a good look at the city. Id stay a day, 2 at max and in the city centre. If you wander our of the centre, seems like you are in another city...seemed very poor to me, a lot of homeless and begging on the streets (im used to that anyway being from a big city) Its also worth getting tickets (get them in advance) for an underground tour of the city..looked great!!close

There isn't a whole lot to do there & there's only one street (Via Zamboni) with just 2 pubs (and English one & an Irish one) that everyone seems to go to but we got lucky with a free screening of 'Easy Rider' in the Piazzo Maggiore. If you're in Bologna you have to go to the orange & white ice cream place at the top of Via Zamboni, it's incredible!close

Next to Turin, this is probably the place for contemporary work (Milan is a bit of a schmorgasbord, old and new). The museums are free and you can scoot around pretty easily by bus, while the city center is compact and clear. Some of the most wonderful creative ventures taking place at night with great outdoor films, lovely high end shopping, and a pleasant community attitude. Far more Italians than tourists, so they don't speak as much English as your bigger cities.close

Very, very nice and cheap three stars hotel, but really too far from the city, like 20 mins by cab. If you just want to chill in a nice hotel than that's for you

Next to a sex shop, but there weren't any creeps around. Excellent location, about 1/2 way between Piazza Maggiore and the train station.

I strongly suggest this hotel that is a real 4 stars and in a good location in Bologna, very convenient to reach the railway station and very close to the city center.
