Bergamo guide
In northern Italy, Bergamo is divided into two distinct areas. These are the città alta (upper town) up on the hill and the città bassa (lower town). San Vigilio, one of the most popular parts of the city's città alta, can be reached by using a funicular and provides stunning views. The città alta is also home to places of interest like the Cittadella and Piazza Vecchia. In contrast to the old town feel of the città alta, the città bassa has a much more modern countenance, and incorporates the city's main shopping areas. A city of over 117,000 inhabitants, Bergamo is close to the foothills of the Alps.

Even a trip to Milan didn\'t impress me and so its a neck of the woods i won\'t be going back to.close

We stayed for 2 days (not long enough as it turned out!) in Citta Alta (the "old" city with its medieval walls and narrow cobble-stoned streets) where we were treated to the best of hospitality and made feel at home in the apartment we stayed in. I got some great video footage of the spectacular view from the top of Citta Alta of the "new" city below and across to the Alps. The cafes and resaurants were exquisite and I would recommend a visit to the Oreo Center for those shopaholics though Citta Base (the new city of Bergamo) had plenty on offer too with its pedestrianised streets and big name shops. Prices were reasonable and coming from Ireland we found Bergamo to be somewhat cheaper than Cork (a similar sized city on the south coast of Ireland). My partner had been to Milan before but found Bergamo to be the zenith!close

There is a great provincial art collection(moments from the good value Academia B&B), a youthful buzz thanks to the university, and a beautiful rambling medieval old town high on a hill, overlooking a vibrant, modern city below. Throw in some excellent restaurants, a good value comprehensive bus network (get a three day ticket from the airport tourist office for 5 Euros) and the charm of a city not yet heaving with tourists and you have the perfect recipe for a low-cost, top-notch break.close

It is a 30min bus ride out of Bergamo and the buses aren't completely reliable. However, staying in this charming little village is worth it. Make sure you spend an evening at the great little enoteca around the corner from the bed and breakfast. The B&B echos a bit but the host is very welcoming and friendly and the accommodation is lovely. Make sure you take note of the address as there is no sign advertising the B&B so it's easy to miss.close

Only 1 out of 10 people speak (poor) English. Another negative point is that the public transport in Italy is badly organized. Buses, metros and trains travel only once in half an hour or worse. Tickets cannot be bought in the buses and trains, while the ticketshops are only open on weekdays and between office hours. So if you arrive in Bergamo in the evening or on a saturday or sunday you might get trouble getting anywhere!close

Amazing place - facilities, amenities, highly attentive and personable service, location. Would not go anywhere else in Bergamo (and now am considering to stay here for my Milan visits, too, commuting on the train each morning and night), Abaco is so outstanding! Thank you for a great stay.

Citta Alta100%
This is by far the most beautiful part of Bergamo. It is quite different from the old areas in other lombardian cities, as for a while in the past it was an outpost of the venetian empire. While the whole city is wonderful (and far better than over-rated Milan), this takes the cake. The centre is Piazza Vechia, a beautiful square with loads of pretty side...
