It's a great little town which feels like a small US or Canadian winter / summer resort. The locals are very friendly, but the pistes are a bit limiting. That said, it's proper lakes and mountains country. We stayed in Cabanas Pailahue, on the lakeside main road which were superb.close

We hired a car from Esquel to Bariloche and explored the Lakes that way. We didn't think the Seven Lakes Route lived up to its reputation (lots of road works and trees preventing any real views of any of the lakes!), but loved coming back from San Martín de los Andes down Route 63 through the canyons. We also highly recommend camping in P. N. Lanín - lovely - and the south of P. N. Nahuel Huapi.close

Bariloche would be a great place to hang out if the weather cooperates. If you are forced to stay indoors there is not much to do. The wind is strong and very chilly which was in mid December. We think that you get better value for your money staying in a place like San Martin de la Andes...more Bariloche would be a great place to hang out if the weather cooperates. We also hiked up to the mirador that offers spectacular views of Lago Guittierez. On our second day in Bariloche we were treated to a traditional gaucho parade and dance as it was the national day of Gaucho tradition. Compared to Ushuaia and Calafate we felt we got more for our money too.close

Best place to meet people (who are not teenagers out on a school trip) is the Wilkinney Pub, but be prepared to spend around 9 pesos for a pint of Quilmes. Lots of great night clubs as well, but, they tend to be filled with the afore mentioned teenagers looking to get drunk out of their skulls.close

The people here are the most helpful. And while one has to be very patient for the bus, it is cheap and easy. But the staff would be happy to drive you for a very reasonable price. The common area is excellent.

  2. Bariloche Hostel 92%

Very friendly and helpful staff. Inconsistent and rather slow wifi, though the hostel's computer seemed to run fine. Not a party hostel at all, which suited me. Ensuite bathrooms (not a fave of mine). About 15 minutes from the town centre. Would definitely stay here again.

I really liked Bariloche Hostel! Very comfortable, spotlessly clean, great kitchen, great staff. It's not for those who want a wild party, music, bar, etc. It's for those who want a really good quiet comfortable place to stay.

  3. Hostel 41 Below 92%

Free WIFI, the best bunks we have stayed in on our travels and a lovely laid back atmosphere. Coupled with the fact that Paul had over 2000 class songs on his computer and was playing them over the hostel sound system. A1 hostel

Awesome room and the staff was more than happy to give us two single beds instead of the matrimonial bed that we made reservations for. I love the common room and the breakfast was very nice. We had an awesome time and would definitely recommend it.

  5. Hostel El Gaucho 89%

Very good hostel, the staff was very funny and helpful. The location is also very good, just 10 minutes walk to Centro Civico. Baths were a little bit dirty, but roons were very clean. Hardly recomend!!!

The hostel itself is great: the staff are friendly and very knowledgeable, the place is clean and secure, and it's generally a nice place to stay. The only drawback is the location; I came to Bariloche in bus and spent an hour walking from the bus terminal to the hostel, which is on the opposite...

Top Rated Bariloche Restaurants

  1. Man standing on street corner!!100%

Yep, there is a man selling blood sausages, spiced sausages and steak sandwiches from a little BBQ on the corner of the Centro Civico. Nothing like street food in S America, just pure quality. One of the best feeds to date!

  2. Dias de Zapata60%

Owned by Mexicans, but they are producing very middle of the road food, for relatively high prices. The only saving grace was the wine, but who can really get that wrong in argentina!

Top Rated Bariloche Attractions

  1. White Water Rafting100%

Used patagonia rafting to do their level III IV 1 day tour, and it was nothing short of amazing. The guides were quality, and really kept us safe and entertained at the same time. We even managed to flip the boat at the end, but the guides reacted quickly, and we were never in danger. Then there was an amazing BBQ after in some of the best scenary I have...

  2. Mount Tronador Trek100%

This is a beautiful overnight trek close to Bariloche. There are beautiful views of the mountains and lakes and you cross over a small river on a wooden bridge. There was snow at the top when we got there and there is a fab view from the top. You also get to walk along the glacier. We had a great night in the mountain hut with freshly cooked food by the...

Top Rated Bariloche Bars

  1. Wilkenny80%

Another Irish bar with too much "irish" merchandise on the wall. Staff were a bit dopey and do busy talking to each other to serve food, but that said the food was good on arrival. A good crowd in there as well, leading to a good atmosphere.
