Melbourne is one of my favourite cities and I have been to quite a few around the world. Its got everything. People are friendly. Theres a beach in the cool and trendy suberb of St Kilda. The shopping is great and its cheap. The bars and restaurants are fab and there is so much choice. They are cheap too! The Great Ocean Road is not too far away. The weather is great, though it does get cold and windy in winter!

Brilliant city. While i do love Sydney, Melbourne has a very different vibe to it, its alot more chilled out and SO many coffee shops to choose from. If you are a coffee fiend (or hot chocolate for me!) definitely the place to get the best one!

So much to do here whether its going to an AFL game (essential and Melbourne really is the home of AFL) or a trip down the strand in St Kilda or a boat ride over to Williamstown it really is a great city.

Excellent nightlife as well, especially since the revamp of Federation Square. Also if you fancy taking in 4 seasons in one day, this is definitely the place to be!!!

as much as i loved Sydney, i loved Melbourne for entirely different reasons, for one its alot more laidback then Sydney, plus the music scene is second to none, melbourne has huge greek and italian communities, so you can guess that the cuisine and the choice of restuarants is excellent to,the arts are also huge in Melbourne so their is plenty to do in that regard also

Melbourne was my top city in Australia. I lived there for 3 months, staying in a hostel and doing door to door sales. Melbourne is a new city and has a cultural mix of nationalities unlike any other city. Its got the tastiest restaurants, great bars and lots of happening suburbs. The skyline is amazing and along the Yarra river a great place to hang out and have an open barbequeue.

There's a reason why this city is voted 'the most livable city in the world' year upon year. And after living there for 4 months i was in tears leaving! For me it was way ahead of Sydney due to the laid back nature of it and the coffee culture and cool bars and suburbs. I could go on and on but it's a must while in Oz. St Kilda is one of the best parts too!

I've been to Melbourne a few times now and I love the city more and more every time. Being European, I think a lot of the city's appeal is that it reminds me of my home continent. Aside from the European flavour, however, the shopping is superb, you'll find excellent bars and restaurants on every corner and the people are super friendly....did I mention the shopping????

Melbourne is a gorgeous city!! It has a very European feel! The way the city is laid out is great and very easy to get around on either the trams or walking. I really enjoyed my holiday in Melbourne, the night life and shopping was great! I was lucky to be there when the comedy festival was on so I got to enjoy different comedians in Federation Square for free!! But they are always doing different festivals so it doesn’t matter what time of year you go there is always something on. I would definitely recommend the Great Ocean Road tour; it is a long day but definitely worth it as the views is fantastic! I also went on the Neighbours tour and Neighbours night at the Elephant and the wheelbarrow, both were a laugh!

Melbourne is totally over-hyped. Yes, there's great partying and shopping, and there are heaps of festivals on if you're in town for them, but not a whole lot to do suring the day.

Only spent a weekend there but instantly liked it. It had a lot of character. Looking forward to spending some more time there at the end of the year.

I have stayed at a few hostels around the world and the Ritz being the first in Australia. I was dissappointed. The location is great, unfortunately the cleanliness & ratio of rooms to bathrooms and toilets leave a lot to be desired. I cannot believe smoking is allowed inside and that reception allow loud distruptive noise after prespecified point in time -whatever that may be, for example 12.30am. A nice touch was the easter eggs left at the room doors for easter sunday.

There's something for everyone. It's a great place to base yourself. Easy access to Tassie by boat or plane. Arts are big here. People charming to the point you want to take them home. A fine city not to be missed.

...But I Wouldn't Want To Live There. Having heard about Melbourne as a good getaway destination and supposedly boasting good shopping my expectations may have been a little high. Compared to Sydney (my hometown), transport is a breeze, with most parts of the CBD easily accessible on foot, the choice of restaurants is terrific, and the choice of cheap accommodation is also a bonus. However, for mid-week nightliife Melbourne is sorely lacking. The shopping district is broken into a number of scattered segments without any obvious rhyme or reason. Even when you find what you want, the price is about the same as anywhere else in the country and the potential penalties for being overweight on the return flight makes it just too risky. After dark the majority of people on the streets were either other backpackers looking for a bit of fun (and looking in vain) or beggars asking for money. If your choice is Sydney or Melbourne, I would strongly recommend Sydney. What you lose by way of transport options and accommodation costs is more than offset by the abundant nightlife and the variety offered by the Sydney CBD and the various surrounding communities and regions.

...is stylish a la 21st century, groovy and yet very laid back (sometimes bohemic). The lovely trams will take you just about everywhere throughout the city. Docklands, Waterfront City, St Kilda and Fed Square are a few of the must see attractions of Melbourne

Loving every minute in Melbourne. Except for our stay in All Nations Hostel - stay clear. The nightlifes quieter than Sydney but there are definately good spots to go out. Generally everything is cheaper execpt for the internet - very expensive. But the sight seeing in and aourn Melbourne is hard to beat.

Melbourne is great place to chill out and party. Admittedly, we had a local friend to show us around which helped a lot, but regardless Melbourne, although it is small, is a very relaxed and chilled ot place, and yet at the same time has a great metropolitan quality.

With it's trams melbourne is the most European city in Down Under! melbourne is about going out, not about staying at the hostel.

Melbourne is very funky and a great place to chill out to some awesome music or to go shopping with a friend and chill out in a cafe or so. I stayed in St. Kilda and found that to be a very good place aswell because it's easy to get into town and it was right on

Lived in Melbourne for a month 7 years ago but was there again recently and saw a completely different side to it. Has loads of cool bars and restaurants that you won't find in any other Aussie city and it's more European than the slightly Americanised Sydney.

Melbourne isn\'t Sydney. Whether thats a good thing or not, I don\'t know. Sydney is the beautiful sister that everyone likes and always has fun with. Melbourne is like the ugly sister, with a nicer personality. Melbourne has a better vibe, is easy to get around and has good food and drinking outlets in and around the city. It has the slightly Bohemian feel of Budapest in the 1980\'s. Only the Yarra isn\'t nearly as beautiful as other rivers in large cities (in fact I would place it closer to the very bottom of the pile). One thing i definitely did like about Melbourne was the fact they oppostie Crown Casino was a place called Batman Park. Anywhere that\'s neaming parks after Batman is surely on the right path...

Returning back to Oz after 4 years away I was shocked at how much more expensive it is now. A lot of people are blaming the drought but I think that this is an excuse being used by a lot of people who are profiteering. To save money, stay in hostels with self-catering facilities and cook for youself, eating out and drinking has become very expensive here.

Great city to visit, there\'s always something to do as long as you search for it. There\'s so much to say about it that I wouldn\'t know where to start. It definitely rivals Sydney as a fun active Australian city.
